Using your knowledge of organelles in cells DIAGRAM the process of protein synthesis in a cell by explaining how proteins are assembled within a cell. Select a diagram that will best illustrate the process. Select a Level below. Follow the instructions to complete your diagram.

Using cellsalive.com identify the parts of each cell on your worksheet.
Level 1
Use these terms to create your diagram:
DNA ribosome
RNA cytosol
nucleus amino acids
Level 2
Use these terms to create your diagram:
DNA ribosome
mRNA cytosol
tRNA nucleus amino acids
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Level 3
Answer the following questions to assist you in creating your diagram:
-
What molecules are needed to create protein?
-
What organelles assist in protein synthesis? Use at least 6 organelles!
-
What are the functions of each of these organelles?
Day 2
Newbie
Do Now
1. Label the organelles that are missing.
2. State the function of the organelles that ARE labelled:
-
Cytoplasm
-
Mitochondria
-
Cell membrane
-
Endoplasmic Reticulum

Complete the venn diagram that compares and contrasts the organelles and processes within plant, animal, and bacterial cells. Use your notes, the video or this site to assist in completing the venn diagram. You can find the venn diagram worksheet in the NOTES button in Day 1. It is the last page of the document.
Newspaper Ads are used to seek or offer goods and services to its readers. Below are examples of newspaper ads and an example of an ad seeking the assitance of an organelle.
Select two organelles and create an ad for each organelle. Post your ad on padlet [SECT 1, SECT 2, SECT 3, SECT 4].
Day 3 / 4

Which of the following clues would tell you whether a cell is prokaryotic or eukaryotic?
1. Whether or not the cell has membrane-bound organelles
2. The presence or absence of ribosomes
3. Whether or not the cell carries out cellular metabolism
4. Whether or not the cell contains DNA

PEA
Read the details of the "Mysterious Organism". Use PEA (Perspective, Edvidence, and Analysis) to argue the two perspectives based on the passage. Perspective is your argument or point of view. Evidence is the information that supports your perspective. Analysis explains HOW the evidence supports your perspective. Example:
Perspective: The mysterious organism is composed of plant cells
Evidence #1: Plant cells dispose waste
Analysis: Plant cells have large vacuoles that are used to dispose the waste products of plant cells
You should come up with 5 different pieces of evidence to support each perspective.
Illustration
Based on the passage create an illustration of this "Mysterious Organism". Label all the organelles found in the cells of the organism. Include a short description of the function of the organelles found in the cells of this mysterious organism.
Rebuttal
You should write two rebuttals based on the evidence you've selected for each perspective. One rebuttal will refute the evidence supporting the idea that the cells are animal cells. The other rebuttal will refute the evidence supporting the idea that the cells are plant cells.
Writing your rebuttal
1. Pick the weakest piece of evidence from each perspective.
2. How can this piece of evidence be used to support the opposing perspective?
