Microscopes

Day 1

Do Now

The diagram below illustrates the result of growing a garlic bulb in a cup of distilled water over five days.

Design an experiment consisting of a control and three different experimental groups to test the prediction, “Garlic grows better as the salt concentration of the solution in which it is grown increases. ” In your answer, be sure to:

  • describe the control to be used in the experiment

  • describe the difference between the three experimental groups

  • describe one example of experimental results that would support the prediction

Semi-Pro

Watch the following video. Access the worksheet using the "Notes" tab. Answer the following focus question: How do the parts of the microscope function to view different specimen?

Now watch the 2nd video for the actual functions of the parts of the microscope. Make sure to write down the actual functions on your notes sheet.

Watch the first video again. Answer this focus question basaed on the video: How do we effectively use the microscope to view different specimen?

Do Now

Many plants can affect the growth of other plants near them. This can occur when one plant produces a chemical that affects another plant.

Design an experiment to determine if a solution containing ground-up goldenrod plants has an effect on the growth of radish seedlings. In your experimental design be sure to:

  • state a hypothesis to be tested

  • describe how the experimental group will be treated differently from the control group

  • identify the type of data that will be collected

  • describe experimental results that would support your hypothesis

Semi-Pro

You will need a microscope to complete today's lesson.

Before using the microscope let's do some review based on these two focus questions:

  • How do the parts of the microscope function to view different specimen?

  • How do we effectively use the microscope to view different specimen?

The review questions can be found on your Notes sheet (Click the Notes button above). Watch the video to find the answers to the Review questions.

Now that you are familiar with the parts of the microscope and the steps to properly view specimen using the microscope, let's view a prepared slide under 3 different power objectives.

Illustrate your observations!

Describe observational differences between the specimen viewed using the naked eye compared to microscopic view.

Boss Level

You work as a sales consultant for the company Microscopes Ltd. Your job requires you to sell as many microscopes to educational institutions to fulfill your annual quota. Your company sells stereomicroscopes and various electron microscopes. The companies competitor sells compound light microscopes and usb microscopes. Create a presentation or write a compelling argument to Hudson University persuading thm to purchase microscpes from your company and not the competitor.

In your argument or presentation be sure to:

  • Indicate how Hudson University would use your microscopes within science classrooms

  • Identify advantages of the microscopes your company sells

  • Identify disadvantages of thr vompetitors microscopes

  • Including images may help build a stronger case
